Our tales from the crypt

The research documented here was carried out by volunteers in 2019—2020 as part of a project led by the Diocese of London and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The research was carried out by volunteers in 2019 and 2020 as part of a project led by the Diocese of London and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Our volunteers were fantastic and we couldn’t have delivered this project without them, so we’d like to wish them all a huge vote of thanks!

The starting point for the research was the Holy Trinity burial register which listed the individual’s names, addresses, dates of burial, age at the time of death and the name of the officiating minister.

The Cloudesley Association

Additional research about some of the residents and businesses of the Cloudesley Square area has been shared by the Cloudesley Association, which has been a good friend to the project.

The Cloudesley charity

The history of the charity established by Sir Richard Cloudesley has been explored in depth by local historian Dr Cathy Ross for the Cloudesley charity. It can be downloaded from their website.

Help us add more stories

We will continue to add more of the longer and more detailed tales of the people buried in the crypt.

If there are individuals who you would like to research further, or if you have information to add to what we've discovered so far, please get in touch.

We aim to move on to look at the history of the area from the 1850s to the present day and would be delighted if you wished to join us in the next phase of the project.
